Counselors Are Seeking Social Justice Involvement

1/25/2017

Comments

Hello CSJ Members,
I thought I would share a tweet that we received from the ACA magazine, Counseling Today. It is exciting to see that counselors clearly want to get involved with social justice. Social media is a great way to share our counseling principles of social justice. Thank you for your involvement. If you are on Twitter, please follow us @CounselingCSJ. In the last couple of months, we have added nearly 100 followers. #GoCSJ.

Elections

1/14/2017

Comments

Aloha CSJ and ACA members,
As your CSJ Governing Council Representative I am very aware of the significant role that our elected officials play in the future of ACA as well as the counseling profession. With this in mind, I am hopeful that our 500 and some CSJ members will take the opportunity to vote and put social justice issues at the forefront of our profession through our elected officials.
The ACA 2017 elections is open and the deadline to vote is Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

New leadership means new ideas, new areas of focus on, and the potential for change! The ACA leadership can have a direct impact on where the counseling profession is heading. We strongly encourage all members to vote in this year’s elections. Make sure your voice is heard!
All ACA members will be able to vote for the ACA President-Elect. ACA Student members will be able to vote for the ACA Governing Counsel Student Representative.   Both the student and the president play a key role on the Governing Council.  So please be sure to vote.
You will be able to read biographical information for the candidates through the ACA site or the email sent directly to you from ACA.
IMPORTANT: Only members in good standing as of Nov. 1, 2016 will be eligible to vote for the ACA President-elect and various division and region positions.
If you have any difficulty casting your e-ballot, please contact Votenet, ACA’s service provider, at 1-866-984-3125 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. ET. Would you prefer a paper ballot? Please contact ACA Member Services at 800-347-6647 ext. 222 to request one. You must send your paper ballot to Votenet headquarters by Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017. You will receive an addressed, stamped envelope with your paper ballot. The mailing address is: Votenet Solutions, Inc. P.O. BOX 15209 Arlington, VA

In addition to the ACA elected positions we also have a number of CSJ candidates running for CSJ positions and so I hope you will cast your vote for the CSJ elections and any other division that you belong to.

Research Participation for School Counselors

1/2/2017

Comments

Dear Professional School Counselors,
My name is Shekila Melchior. I am a former high school counselor. I worked in Bassett, Virginia for three years and I am a doctoral candidate in the Counselor Education program at Virginia Tech. This dissertation research study is under the advisement of Dr. Nancy Bodenhorn. I am conducting a study to increase our knowledge of the social justice identity development of Professional School Counselors at the secondary level who advocate for undocumented students. If you are a secondary School Counselor who identifies as an advocate for undocumented students, I would like to invite you to participate.
  • The interview is informal and will last 45-60  minutes and will be audio-recorded.
  • The interview will take place in person or virtually in a space that is confidential and comfortable for you. Your participation in the study will be kept confidential and all identifying information will be removed.
  • You can withdraw from the study at any time.
There is no compensation for this study but your participation will contribute greatly to increasing our knowledge of the school counselor’s social justice identity development.
If you are interested in participating in this study, please complete the demographic questionnaire. The demographic questionnaire should take 10-15 minutes to complete. You can access the questionnaire  from the following link: https://virginiatech.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_e4CQOj4XtrGHNpb
At the completion of the demographic questionnaire, if you are eligible to participate in the study you will receive an email to schedule the interview.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact myself, Shekila Melchior at shekilam@vt.edu or my faculty advisor, Dr. Nancy Bodenhorn at nanboden@vt.edu.
Warm Regards,
Shekila Melchior
