Title: A Day of Service at ACA 2018: Counseling is Rooted in Advocacy
Presenter: Kim Lee Hughes, University of Texas at San Antonio
Description:
The counseling profession is unique from other mental health professions because it is rooted in advocacy. It is not enough to assist our individual clients and students (micro-level), we must improve the context of their environment (meso-level) and encourage them to improve society (macro-level). I am the Vice President for African American Concerns with the Association of Multicultural Counseling & Development (AMCD), let’s discuss ways you can advocate at the 2018 ACA Conference in Atlanta.
  • Participants will learn a definition for advocacy in counseling and counselor education
  • Participants will examine intersectionality issues and the impact of those identities on their service
  • Participants will learn how to start an advocacy agenda rooted in their intersectionality
Short Presenter Bio:
Dr. Lee Hughes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Her clinical, research, and advocacy concentrations include: counseling ethics, empowerment for people of color, culturally affirmative counseling interventions, and qualitative research methodologies. Dr. Lee Hughes is the Vice-President of African American Concerns with AMCD.
